ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES

Now, for some of the more interesting alternative health services you can find in Uruguay. I can only go on my experiences and those others have shared with me so this article is far from a complete overview. If you have had any experiences with alternative health treatment in Uruguay please let us know about it.

I have tried to include links to informational websites about the various therapies listed for those who aren't familiar with them.

Some people view massage as a beauty or spa treatment but it can be an excellent way to reduce stress, relieve pain, improve circulation and much more. The skin is our biggest organ after all - if stimulated it obviously will have a beneficial effect on the whole body.

  • Maria del Carmen is a fantastic masseuse. She also does reflexology (therapeutic foot massage) and has 2 walls full of qualifications if you need proof of her abilities. She operates from a small apartment in Punta Carretas (on Dr. H Miranda opposite the shopping mall). Her cell number is 096-239-524. Spanish only.
  • Elizabeth Reyes is also an excellent massage therapist and aromatherapist but offers other alternative health treatments. The full list of her areas of qualifications is available here and includes reiki and color therapy. Her cell number is 099-277-199. She is also the president of The Association of Naturopaths and Holistic Therapists of Uruguay (ANTHU). The website of ANTHU lists all the services and recommended therapists. These services range from acupuncture and hypnosis to homeopathy and reiki. She speaks limited English.

Auriculotherapy is a process involving stimulation of the surface of the ear. It's quick and inexpensive. Contact: Magda Acevedo Cell: 094-896-912 (fluent English).

Yoga is something that many people in the US and Europe are taking up as a healthy way to stay fit, flexible and healthy in order to ward off minor illnesses. The Alternative Health Centre in Pocitos offer pilates and yoga classes (even some taught through English!). I believe they also offer therapies such as reiki, pranic healing and something called the Feldenkrais Method. This center is located on Pedro Berro no. 835 (between Scoseria and Zudanez).

Their website www.centrodealternativas.com outlines the services they offer and their phone number is (02) 711-98-60.

Portal Tierras Del Sol is another resource I have come across listing alternative therapies. Their website lists therapies such as EMF Balancing Technique and Magnified Healing. They are located on Jose Ellauri 986 and their phone number is (02) 707-50-44. They also have a shop there which sells a variety of alternative healing items, including books (mostly Spanish), DVDs, possibly some vitamins and other stuff.

The owner, Sylvia speaks fluent English, though others on staff there may not.

I have yet to try acupuncture in Uruguay but I have had 2 people recommended to me. The first is man called Daniel, I believe he is a chiropractor and also practices acupuncture. His cell phone is 099-466-373. I will provide information on the second one I confirm it.

When seeking out alternative health therapies keep in mind that licensing and regulation in Uruguay may be more limited than in other areas. Some might consider this a good thing. On the other hand, you could present yourself as a chiropractor without any knowledge of how to perform the adjustments. Research and ask questions. Please feel free to share your experiences with me to add here here and/or in our forum.
